Report(Jonathan Hillier)

The day started with us walking up the short stretch of road to the start of the steps. We then followed the steps, crossing the jeep track possibly twice. The first part of the hike is generally the hardest and between being half asleep and active the younger guys were visibly feeling it! Eventually the path formed a t-junction with jeep track were we braked for water allowing minor relief to those who already exhausted.

We were now forced to hike further on the jeep track as the steps had ended and we did so for roughly half an hour before reaching De Viliers dam were we stopped at the near by fountain, both to drink water and to catch our breaths.

We then continued along the path, walking over the Victoria dam wall, towards the scout hut which was our designated lunch point.

Once again(now at the Scout hut)we began making coffee and lunch. We removed our bags and now engulfed in mist, we relaxed in the serenity of the moment.

We returned down the same route and despite the distance of the hike(I believe 16 kilometers) our juniors would probably have killed themselves trying to run down the mountain had it not been for our restraint.

It was a great day and the vibe was good. Caleb and Simon, two cubs who will be joining scouts soon came along and I think the hike was a good taste of what scouts is about!

(I have little doubt that they will be back for more)
